An auteur music video director is someone who is trying to achieve his or her artistic vision of the music video. It is usually quite different to mainstream music videos as it usually has a deeper meaning which can be interpreted in different ways depending on how you watch it. Successful auteur music video directors include Chris Milk, Spike Jones, Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry.
One of my favourites from these directors is Daft Punk – Around the world which was directed by Michel Gondry. I liked this particular video because each act of the music video shows a different part of the song. They are all dancing around in a circle which could refer to the title of the song that they are dancing ‘around the world’. Each set of dancers are to represent different instruments. The Androids represent the singing robot voice, the athletes represent the bass guitar, the swimmers represent the high pitched keyboard, the mummies represent the drums and the skeletons represent the guitar.
