An Auteur is a filmmaker or director who has complete control over a project and because of this the film has a unique stamp on it. In a music video sense and auteur would be a director who produces and directs the music video in his own personal style. Some examples of auteurs in the music video world would be Spike Jonze, Michael Gondry and Chris Milk. Auteurs are often considered postmodern.

I have chosen the music video Keeps Gettin' Better by Christina Aguilera. It is directed by Peter Berg. I feel that this video is auteuristic because it takes the main idea of the song, which seems to be about superheroes and villains, and expands on that throughout the whole video. It is a concept based video, because there is very little storyline, but is also heavily performance based too which can be seen throughout due to her singing. He uses a lot of intertextual references such as Christina dressed as cat woman which goes along with the superhero theme. He also uses a special effect on her so her face is seen like a Lichtenstein painting. The scenes change throughout to different and more eccentric things which could go along with the line 'Keeps Gettin' Better'.
